ARTWORK OF THE MONTH

Submitted by Editor on

THROUGH A GLASS INTRIGUINGLY

I’m often disappointed when visiting an exhibition by not getting the chance to see up close the artwork displayed in the window.

The painting or artwork in the window is often the one to entice the passer-by. It must be attractive and yet it must give a good insight into what’s ahead.

The painting in the window is often the forgotten highlight because it’s only visible from pavement level. If you want to take a closer look then you must peer through the window beside a busy street.

This month at the Open Eye Gallery there is an exhibition by Rosalind Lawless.  Unfortunately I won’t be able to see the full exhibition up close but I’ve been lucky enough to walk by the gallery every weekday and catch a glimpse of an abstract gem in the window. That gem is 'Room Drawing'.

'Room Drawing' does what it should do. It’s inviting and intriguing. I don’t know what it’s about as I don’t have time to stop and wonder, but I’m left with a lasting imprint of its bright colours and obscure shapes.

I don’t get a chance to pause and analyse or critique this work but I don’t want to. If I were to stop for too long perhaps my opinion of it would change. It’s a fleeting glimpse each day and one that I relish.

I strongly recommend a detour along Abercromby Place to take an outside look at this indoor art.—Rhys Fullerton

Rosalind Lawless’s exhibition Transition continues at the Open Eye Gallery (34 Abercromby Place) until Wednesday 14 October. Admission free.

E-mail from Michael Canty, Stockbridge: That dark blue shape on the right occurs in at least two other paintings in the exhibition. I think it may be a French fire hydrant seen side-on.

@theSpurtle It must be a bird and a fish as I'm pretty sure these are the only things that gallery allows in the window.
