BATTER LATE THAN NEVER

If you missed it the first time, a now classic ‘gangsta rap stylee’ video available on youtube is enjoying something of a second wind locally. Or possibly reflux.

cHiP sHop is a lyrical reinterpretation by MC Tickle and others of a song by New York hip hop duo dead prez. Of particular interest to Broughton residents, it features some of this area’s best known and most popular dining establishments.

Eatalia, (Brunswick Road), Café Piccante and Rapido (Broughton Street), Vittoria’s (Brunswick Road) and Deep Sea (Antigua Street) are backdrops for the 3 minute 48 second homage to the delights of battered fish, hot chips, fried black and white pudding, pizza crunch, haggis, salt and sauce, and addictive grease. The Concorde Fish Bar in Tollcross also receives an honourable mention.

Those behind the video are substantially less polite about the the ‘pseudo food’ on offer from Pizza Hut, Kentucky Fried Chicken and McDonald’s which, they assert (in so many words) is less wholesome and nowhere near as delicious.

The pleasantly rounded Tickle, who rhythmically eats his way through fish and chips whilst performing, wears a black t-shirt throughout with a red heart logo. In addition to his healthy-eating message, he encourages fans to ‘try supporting local business’.  

The rap – issued with ‘apologies to Dead Prez’ – was first released in October 2011 and has so far received 12,761 views and 174 likes.

Why it should have resurfaced recently is a mystery, but we thank reader Scott Reed for bringing the phenomenon to our attention.
