BOTANIC COTTAGE WINS HIGH PRAISE

Submitted by Editor on

In Issue 247 we reported that the newly rebuilt Botanic Cottage had been nominated in an annual architectural awards scheme run by the Georgian Society.

The structure was entered in the ‘Best Restoration of a Georgian Landscape or Garden’ category.

Eileen Dickie – a Friend of Hopetoun Crescent Garden with a long involvement in the Botanic Cottage project – now tells us that the Cottage didn’t win, but was commended as an ‘heroic rescue of a garden building of real historic importance … a magnificent  restoration effort … It is a triumph of cratsmanship and scholarly research and the beautifully restored upper floor will now function, once again, as a botany classroom’.

Local resident Jane Corrie represented researchers and the former Botanic Cottage Trust at last night’s ceremony in London, along with James Simpson for the architects, Simon Milne as Regius Keeper of the Botanics, and Brian Watters as site manager for Maxi Construction.

So, a minor disappointment, but as Eileen Dickie observes, ‘To see the Botanic Cottage alongside such an array of amazing projects is wonderful’.
