Just as summer arrives, Spitaki, a new Greek taverna, brings a taste of the Aegean to Broughton at 133 East Claremont Street!
Occupying the former Elbow premises, Spitaki is a joint venture between David Hastings and Christos Babalis.
We decided at short notice to eat at Spitaki on its opening night, and it was full, so we ate dinner on one of the outside tables. The experience was authentically Greek: friendly, family feel, wonderful home-cooked food and slightly chaotic!
As a vegetarian, I was spoilt for choice, and settled on a starter of spicy green peppers with feta cheese served with home-made pitta bread, and a main course of Spanakopita (spinach and feta pie in filo pastry).
My partner – being a meat and fish eater – enjoyed a starter of taramasalata (a tasty fish roe salad, without any of the pink dye normally associated with mass-produced varieties of this) and Keftedes (pork and beef mix kebab served with tzatziki). He had ordered the lamb chops and was disappointed that they had sold out, so they compensated him with a free dish of tasty fried potatoes.
The food was great, the service was friendly and the bill was only £33.40 including half a litre of house wine. Bargain!
The tavern is open 7 days a week but booking is advised at busy times. Check their website for more details: www.Spitaki.co.uk — Mark Bitel
