Following in-person and online discussions with the public which began in September 2022, engineering and design consultants Stantec have updated plans to reconfigure the Powderhall Junction.
The preferred option aims to improve safe and inclusive connectivity and to encourage active travel through the intersection of McDonald Rd, Broughton Road, St Mark’s Path and the entrance to the future housing development.
Features of the final design include:
advanced stop lines and maximised approach lanes for cyclists
simplified (diagonal) route between McDonald Rd and St Mark’s Path
two-way toucan crossing on north side of Broughton Rd
traffic-light-free left-turn for cyclists exiting McDonald Rd
wider Broughton Rd footways between the junction and the railway bridge
pencil bollards, speed cushions and a safe direct pedestrian crossing around the McDonald Rd entrance to Broughton Primary School.
Construction of the new junction will depend on Edinburgh Council’s successful application for funding (probably from Transport Scotland) and the building schedule of new accommodation on the former bowling greens and Powderhall Waste Station site (see Issue 344, forthcoming).
