MORE FUN AND GAMES AT CITY CHOKE-SPOT
Phased utility works lasting 16 weeks began this morning, and will affect traffic on Leith Street.
These are in addition to the works reported here on 28 February which are expected to last up to 44 weeks from September 2017.
Five phases of the latest complex engineering project will involve moving a Scottish Water mains and installing a new, large-diameter gas pipe for SNG.
- For certain periods, both southbound lanes will be closed. A contraflow will will run in the northbound lanes allowing two-way traffic.
- Calton Road will be closed at the junction with Leith Street ‘for a period of time’ as will Calton Hill.
- The western footpath will be closed to pedestrians for some of this period, as will the pedestrian crossing at Greenside Row from around 5 June.
- Greenside Row and the Omni car park will remain open at all times.
The Council’s website so far details disruptions here only up until 28 April. However, SNG’s projected timescale of 16 weeks takes us to 3 July, and ‘connections’ are not scheduled until 2 August.
Work will be carried out between 8am and 4pm, five days a week.
If you have enquiries about the project, call SNG on 0131 469 1757 during office hours (8am to 4pm) or on 0800 912 1700 outwith these times.
Spurtle is surprised by the lack of advanced publicity concerning these disruptions. Warning signs appeared on major thoroughfares elsewhere in the city, but as recently as last week Council spokespersons were unclear about what was proposed.
Locals will inevitably worry about the knock-on effects. Congestion on Leith Street is already causing traffic to seek alternative routes through Broughton. And readers report an increased volume of traffic on east–west routes along Albany Street and from East London Street to Broughton Road.

Guess I'll stick to walking to town the next FOUR MONTHS... FFS...
You'd be as well giving up trying to use any form of transport in the city centre.
@theSpurtle @cstross Is that the start of the North Sea Tunnel to Stavanger?
@theSpurtle signs were up in many parts of the city a couple of weeks ago.
Broughton Spurtle @theSpurtle
@LAHinds But not on Leith Street.
@theSpurtle it is useful to warn people there may be delays?
Broughton Spurtle @theSpurtle
@LAHinds Yes. Especially in places where those likely to be affected are most likely to see the warning. Are you having a quiet afternoon?
Inger Seiferheld @ISeiferheld
The definition of chaos!
Ewan Dougan Eggs and Omelettes.
Broughton Spurtle Certainly an improvement on current road surface.
@theSpurtle Ye gods, the mind boggles.
Paul Foley No biggie. Needs done.
